On discernment ...

Am back from a week long "dialog space" in Sumedhas - on the theme of "Indianness" .. have come back with a lot of questions on this theme that we often take for granted or look at from narrow lenses offered mostly by the media ...

Was also at the Valley School, KFI, yesterday - and found myself in another dialog space - on the themes of 'excellence" and "competitiveness" and their impacts on parents, children, teachers ..

A question that came up in this latter dialog and that has implications, I believe, for leaders ... what is "discernment" all about ... It is easy to suggest that others be discerning ... as in children, or other co-workers ... but what does it take to be discerning for oneself ?

As I wade through this field, it occurs to me that behind the inability / unwillingness to be discerning, is actually the world of fears ... mostly the fear, I believe - of "insufficiency" .. either insufficient money or significance or power or whatever .. these fears when left undialoged, lead to undiscerning action in the system, which in turn leads to an overburdened system, and the only way the system can then achieve some homeostasis is by playing pseudo-compensatory corrective pranks ...
